چکیده

Abstract Background and Aims Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related infections are still associated with an increased risk of morbidity mortality. We describe overview PD peritonitis catheter-related infection (CRI) rates in Malta over a period thirteen years. Method All patients undergoing from 2008 to 2020 were included. Data 2012 was retrospective (shown as mean), whilst data 2013 prospective. ISPD guidelines definitions followed. Results Study population sizes follows: 137 (2008-2012), 91, 80, 126, 117, 102, 103, 101, 101 respectively. 0.38, 0.31, 0.35, 0.46, 0.43, 0.57, 0.54, 0.39, 0.40, 0.37, 0.29 episodes/patient/year Gram-positive episodes predominated, the majority which Staphylococcal infections. Peritoneal dialysis infections: an opportunity for improvement.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter-associated infections remain a challenging cause of technique failure. Patient training and preventive measures are key elements in the management of infection rates. Twenty-seven of the 167 PD catheter transfer sets analyzed (19%) yielded a positive microbial culture (58% gram-negative bacteria). These results show that subclinical contamination, particularly ...

Simultaneous peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion and removal in catheter-related infections without interruption of peritoneal dialysis.

Catheter-related infections result in high patient morbidity, the need for temporary haemodialysis, and high costs. These infections are the main cause of limited technique survival in peritoneal dialysis. We introduced a protocol for the simultaneous peritoneoscopic insertion and removal of peritoneal catheters in patients with catheter-related infections. Peritoneal dialysis was continued the...

Peritoneal dialysis related infections: challenges ahead

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is now a standard therapeutic modality of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) (1). About 80% of ESRD patients in Hong Kong are treated by CAPD. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) related infections, notably peritonitis, are major complications leading to patient morbidity, mortality and technique failure. In this issue, we have two papers addressing these probl...
